Treizième jour - Monday 29th June, Nogaro - Aire-sur-l’Adour - 29.5 klms (running total approx 254.4)

A short post to balance a long day today. Our elapsed travel time was about 8 hours, with 6 1/2 of them actually walking.

One of the things which I've been noticing and which surprises me a lot is the apparent lack of pelerins. We saw two people a little ahead of us earlier this morning, and I think that they were the same two French chaps we saw yesterday. So, two days, two other walkers. The day before that it was one, Jacque from Geneva. The day before that, no-one. Maybe they're around and our times just don't coincide. Or maybe there are very few people doing this stretch.

It seems that there are fewer people around than when we walked the Via de la Plata, and that's renowned for its isolation. Weather? Time of year? Who knows? Not that it matters; it's simply an observation.

One of the sounds I notice most is the birds, especially as we walk through the forested stretches. They were there today having a great time. They were also accompanied by the screaming of what I assume to be French airforce jets doing laps. It provided an unusual ambience. (I should note also that we fell asleep last night to the sound of thunder and rain; something previously only dreamed of.)

That aside, another pretty walk; just a few piccies of the day ...

Not sure what this was. Not a public bath, but sort of. Perhaps a place of community cooling?

Another accommodation challenge today. The place I'd booked was too small and too hot, so we abandoned it and de-camped to an air-conditioned hotel room nearby 😀 ...

Rest day in Aire tomorrow.

One of the joys of being up up by 4am is being able to read about your and Janet's day. Cannot play the videos as it would wake up Me Margaret. Hope the cooler room gives you a good night's sleep.
